Not Good Enough: Better Leadership Needed.

The PTA Advocacy Team at Dr. Michael Conti PS #5 School created this 3rd "Call to Action" email campaign that we can share with Board of Education and city officials. I am sharing on CivicParent to help spread the word & the advocacy.

You can use the automated email below, which will send the note (which you are free to customize) to the Board of Education trustees, Mayor Fulop, all the council representatives, and the respective Council aides. If you don't want to send to all of those individuals at once, simply copy/paste the note below into your email and send to a subset of representatives. If you don't know your ward - use the map below to find out!

All the BOE and city officials' contact information is provided below for your reference.

To the Elected Officials and leaders of the city of Jersey City - the Mayor, City Council, and Board of Education, Many parents, children, residents, and voters have reached out to the council and the BOE over the last several weeks and months, and we will continue to do so until our schools are the fully-functioning educational institutions our kids deserve. The plan announced by Mayor Fulop and Interim Superintendent Walker doesn’t do enough to address the 600 lay-off notices delivered during Teacher Appreciation Week to instructional and non-instructional school staff. We are disheartened to learn that, despite Mayor Fulop & Superintendent Walker suddenly claiming "huge progress" on the educational front in Jersey City, our teachers with pink slips, some of whom already have job offers from other districts, are still waiting on those pinks slips to be rescinded. It is imperative that the pink slips be rescinded as soon as possible- we can’t lose a single teacher. Additionally, perhaps many of you haven’t been in our schools lately, but at this point, they do not have a “small subset” of “redundant, non-instructional staff.” We invite each and every one of you to visit my school to see the situation first hand and to speak to our custodians, security guards and other staff — to see what they do for our kids. Every single person is needed. Next year, our schools face another $25-30 million dollar cut, who will be considered “redundant” then? And the year after that? And the year after that? Cuts cannot be the answer. We demand ZERO layoffs of school staff. What's more, we were truly disappointed to see that BOE President Thomas refused to show up, despite an initial commitment to do so, at the City Council's May 29th budgetary hearing focused on school funding. That lack of commitment and transparency is alarming, and does not display the type of dedication and leadership that is required to manage this funding crisis. We are cautiously optimistic with the news that the city will finally commit to using the city’s balance sheet in a responsible way to give more financial resources to our schools. Jersey city schools need long term, sustainable local funding. Our schools must be prioritized within the citywide budget. Jersey City students deserve a quality education, with safe, clean, fully functioning schools, with sports, music, and the arts. They deserve it all. We will continue to hold you, as our elected officials, accountable. While we are hopeful that you as our elected officials have finally heard the alarm, we still have much more work to do. You must act with urgency, and show that Jersey City schools are your priority. Regards,
